Ngarga Mayi Yarden – Community Garden

Nharangga Country

Nharangga Acknowledgement to Country

We acknowledge the community garden is located on traditional lands of the Nharagga people.  This is their land; this is their home.

We respect the spiritual relationship with the country and their cultural beliefs that are still important to the living Nharangga people today.

Nha marni

Hello, welcome to Kadina Memorial School Community Garden: a place to grow and nurture ourselves and the environment.

The garden is the result of a three-way partnership between Kadina Memorial School, SOS Copper Coast Suicide Prevention Network and the Copper Coast Council after successfully being awarded a $50,000 SA Healthy Towns Challenge grant.

The partnership recognised that an authentic community garden provides a place to grow fresh produce, immerse in nature, as well as opportunities for physical activity tending plots and a ‘quiet’ space for emotional balance.

Our Logo

In 2021, proud Nharangga boy Cheylen Wanganeen designed the community garden logo as part of his Stage 1 Visual Arts studies.

Studying various well-known Indigenous artists, Cheylen chose to paint in blue and green tones to represent the region’s coastline with brown and copper shades symbolising Yorke Peninsula. A meeting circle with a yam epitomises a community coming together.

In October 2021 the garden and logo were officially opened and unveiled.

Community involvement

Community members are encouraged to visit with the garden, accessible outside of school time/term during daylight hours.

Garden beds are available for groups and individuals to plant produce, as well as opportunities to become more involved in the general maintenance of the environment, such as weeding and garden development projects.

For more information on how to become involved or secure a plot for this year please contact the school’s front office during term time on 08 8821 0100, Monday to Friday, between 8:30am-3:30pm.

Garden Etiquette

The garden is a place of solitude, relaxation, and enjoyment of nature.

  • Treat the garden and its visitors with respect.
  • Respect the work of others in the garden and do not take private produce
  • Vegie beds are marked by those who are tending them and are private beds
  • Bed or plants marked ‘Please help yourself’ are available for anyone to try the produce. Please remember to share with others.
  • The garden is a non-smoking area
  • Keep garden beds as organic as possible
  • Be water wise
  • Keep personal plots tidy by taking home rubbish or put in bins provided and putting green waste in compost
  • Please report any damage to the school front office, on 8821 0100
  • See our facebook page ‘Copper Coast Community Wellness Garden’ for updates on items of interest and events in the garden.

Living ‘memorial’

Kadina Memorial School is a ‘living’ memorial to Australian Defence Force personnel. A memorial archway located at the school’s front entrance pays tribute to those local men and women who have served in the armed forces overseas through the many wars, conflicts and ‘war-like’ peace corp operations during South Australia’s relatively short history since settlement.

Cor Infinitus – Infinite Courage – is a national initiative which recognises the sacrifices and on-ongoing emotional wellbeing of veterans and emergency services personnel.  Two granite plinths under this initiative have been established in the ‘peace park’ area of the garden to remind of the often quiet ‘battle’ suffered by those on the frontline.

This project was sourced and funded by the SOS Copper Coast SPN and Wallaroo RSL representatives.

Our journey – photo gallery

Students have played a major role in the construction of the garden, with individuals and community groups pitching in at working bees, as well as donations.
