KMS Disability Unit

The KMS Unit is an integral part of Kadina Memorial School and supports and provides learning opportunities for students with a range of disabilities including visual impairment, hearing impairment, physical impairment, intellectual impairment, speech language impairment and autism spectrum disorder. Students who are able, participate in a negotiated inclusion program, tailored to their interests and needs.

There are two classes of eight students who are supported by a classroom teacher and support staff, the number of which varies according to enrolment and specific needs and programs. To be eligible for consideration of placement in the Unit, the student must meet a range of criteria including Guidance Officer recommendation for Special placement.

The Unit aims to develop skills for personal independence and effective participation in society, including functional literacy and numeracy, communication, social skills and work skills. We recognise that each child has individual needs, abilities and strengths therefore all curriculum outcomes are aligned to their Negotiated Education Plan (NEP) goals.

Students participate in community-based activities including Fun Gym at the Kindergym facilities, gym at the Copper Coast Fitness and Leisure Centre, shopping at the local supermarket, sporting carnivals and a recycling program.

In the Senior years of schooling, students work towards a Modified SACE Certificate with relevant learning in each of the SACE areas. In Year 12 a work experience program on an ongoing weekly basis, aims towards teaching skills to help students transition smoothly from school to work.
